# Tintdex

Public catalog of terminal color schemes. No authentication.

## How to connect

1. Prefer the Tintdex MCP server at https://tintdex.afengim.com/mcp. Tools: search_schemes, get_scheme, list_formats, get_config, adjust_palette, list_categories, list_families. Prompt: setup_terminal_theme.
2. If MCP is unavailable, call the REST API described by https://tintdex.afengim.com/openapi.json.
3. If you only need an unmodified file, curl https://tintdex.afengim.com/raw/{slug}/{format}.

## Workflows

### Find a theme

Call `search_schemes` with `q`, optional `tone` (`dark`|`light`), `tags` (category slugs), `family`, `sort`, `limit`, `offset`, and `locale` (default `en`). Then `get_scheme` for the full palette and similar schemes.

REST: `GET https://tintdex.afengim.com/api/v1/schemes?q=dracula` and `GET https://tintdex.afengim.com/api/v1/schemes/{slug}`.

### Install and enable

Call `get_config` with `slug` and `format` (ghostty, kitty, iterm2, alacritty, wezterm, windows-terminal, warp, foot, rio, xfce4-terminal, xresources, vscode, zed). Follow the `install` object: download commands, activation mode, config paths, snippet, `check`, and verify text.

Or fetch `https://tintdex.afengim.com/api/v1/schemes/{slug}/configs/{format}?output=text` and the matching `/prompt` URL.

Use prompt `setup_terminal_theme` when the user asked you to set the theme up on this computer.

Before changing anything:

1. Confirm you can read and write files and run commands on this machine. If you can't, give the user manual steps and the config URL; never report success you didn't achieve.
2. Confirm the app is installed and find the config file it actually uses. `configFiles` lists defaults; prefer the one that exists.
3. Check `install.agentCanComplete`. When it is `false` (iTerm2, Warp, XFCE4 Terminal), the final step is a selection in the app's UI. Place the file, then tell the user the exact menu path. Don't simulate clicks or edit undocumented internal settings.
4. You can't see the screen. Run `install.check` when present, re-read the edited file, then ask the user to confirm the colors in `verify`.

### Customize then install

Call `adjust_palette` with either `slug` or `p` (not both), plus `hue` (-180..180), `saturation` (0..200), `lightness` (-50..50), `contrast` (50..150), and optional `overrides`. Pass the returned `p` into `get_config`.

REST: `POST https://tintdex.afengim.com/api/v1/palettes/adjust`.

### Export CSS, Tailwind, or JSON

Use format `css`, `tailwind`, or `json`. These have no setup prompt. `get_config` still returns the file.

## Enable cheat sheet (13 apps)

- Ghostty: save to `~/.config/ghostty/themes/`, set `theme =` in config
- Kitty: save to `~/.config/kitty/themes/`, `include themes/{file}` in kitty.conf
- Alacritty: save under themes/, add to `[general] import`
- WezTerm: save under colors/, set `config.color_scheme`
- Rio: save under themes/, set `theme =`
- foot: save under themes/, `include=` in foot.ini
- iTerm2: `open` the `.itermcolors` file to import it; the user selects the preset in Settings → Profiles → Colors
- Warp / XFCE4 Terminal: save the file to the themes folder; the user picks it in Settings
- Xresources: save as `~/.Xresources.d/tintdex`, add `#include ".Xresources.d/tintdex"` to ~/.Xresources only once, then `xrdb -merge ~/.Xresources`. Never append the palette itself; reruns would duplicate it
- Windows Terminal / VS Code / Zed: merge JSONC (comments and trailing commas allowed); do not overwrite the settings file
- Quote URLs in shell commands; config URLs contain `?` and `&`

## Safety

- Back up every file you will change (`<file>.bak`) before editing.
- Merge theme keys. Keep all other settings.
- Do not delete the user's other configuration.
- Report changed files, how to undo, and any step the user still has to do by hand.

## Errors

If a slug or format returns 404, call `search_schemes` and pick a close match. Invalid parameters return 400 problem+json.
